Honda Key Fob Info

Woman Walking Towards 2020 Honda Pilot

The Honda key fob gives New London-area drivers access to a wide variety of convenient functions. With the push of a button, you can lock and unlock your car doors, remotely start the engine, activate memory seat settings, and more. Note that the features of your Honda key fob will depend on which Honda model you drive. Learn more about what your Honda key fob can do in this guide from the experts at Westbrook Honda.

Locking/Unlocking the Vehicle

This is one of the most basic functions of the Honda key fob. Just press the lock.unlock button. With a Smart Key Fob, which is available on the Honda Accord and other select models, you don’t even have to push a button. Once you put your hand in the door handle, with the key fob in your pocket or purse, the car will automatically unlock the doors. The vehicle will beep to inform you that the doors are unlocked.

Open the Trunk

All you have to do is press the trunk button on the key fob.

Roll Down the Windows

Yes, you can even roll down the windows from outside the car, an especially nice feature on hot days in the Branford area. Depending on which Honda model and key fob you have, you can roll down the window with the push of one button, or two or three clicks on the appropriate button. Check your owner’s manual for details on your specific Honda model.

Remote Start

Vehicles equipped with Remote Start will have a specific button for this feature.

Memory Seat Presets

On the back of the Honda Smart Key Fob are buttons marked 1 and 2. You can program these buttons while inside your car to preset the memory seat to your liking. Then, every time you enter the vehicle with your key fob, the seats will automatically adjust to the preset position

How to Replace a Honda Key Battery

The following steps will demonstrate how to open a Honda key fob, how to remove/replace the battery, and how to put the key fob back together.

  1. Press and slide the button that releases the metal key, and then slide the key out.
  2. Use the key or a small flathead screwdriver to pry the key fob open.
  3. Press your thumb down right above the battery to hold the fob together so the contents and external buttons don’t fall out.
  4. Remove the dead battery, taking note of the positive and negative sides, in order to install the new battery correctly. Don’t touch the terminals on the new battery. The oils on your skin can cause corrosion, which shortens battery life.
  5. Insert the new battery in the same position as the old one. Use the positive (+) and negative (-) marks inside the key fob as a guide.
  6. Align the two halves of the key fob and gently apply pressure until they snap back together.

Note: Some Honda key fobs have a screw that holds the two halves together instead of a button. To open, use a small flathead screwdriver to remove the screw, and then follow the steps above to replace the battery.

What Should I Do If my Honda Key Fob Falls Apart?

If the internal pieces of your key fob fall out, don’t panic. You can use your spare key as a guide on how to reassemble it.

  1. Place the buttons into the correct slots.
  2. Insert the crossbar between the empty spaces of the top two buttons, with the crossbar’s curvature facing outwards.
  3. Insert the battery back into the motherboard with the positive sign facing out.
  4. Put the motherboard back into the key fob with the rubber film up against the buttons.
  5. Line up the back of the key fob with the front, and press them together until you hear them snap into place.
  6. Stand next to your vehicle and press all the buttons to make sure that they are working properly.
